So what now?

I don’t know, honestly.

The farthest I have gotten is champagne, music, cigarettes and dvds for dinner, hiding from the sun and waiting.

Tomorrow I have to go buy a new outfit for a business trip I am taking this week.

I am a failure at so many things, it’s completely unreal.

This is for what it might be like once you get out. How nine years of childhood together hasn’t changed a thing, that we still seek new things to embellish our chaos with, and when we can’t find it, we convulse with laughter at the old, just to make our lives work with something besides idle destruction. Because we need eachother. And because your mother looks like Sigorney Weaver. And because girls should play with girls, and boys with other boys, and because nothing was ever said about two souls triumphant together with with the Buddha’s Big Heart and Cosmic Laughter.

Yes, I Really Think So, Part Six

in the air, probably still over oregon; 01 may 2007

Today was such a good day; I was powerful and efficient at work, I was a BMW.

And then after work the people on my team went for bowling and beers and everyone was great and there was a lot of laughing.

And during the first game I got the highest score on my team, and was generally charming and felt more myself than I had around work people, or really, any people, for awhile, maybe since I was in California.

And while we were at the bowling alley I thought about the strangest game of bowling I ever played, with Fred, who was probably up to that point in my life the most beautiful boy I had ever seen. The depth of his eyes and the fullness of his mouth made me incredibly nervous, but he had an easy smile and a beautiful laugh and used to gently offer me the nicest compliments.

And I thought about how Ida was his favorite band and how much softness that spread through my chest, and about mix-tapes exchanged, what it sounded like when he would sing “Downtown” (doo-doo, doo-doo, doo-doooo-oooooooo-ooooo) and how the walls of my room would turn pink in the early morning while we traded stories and silly plans.

So I came home and smashed up some frozen lemonade for dinner and put on Ida and thought about the comfort of easy smiles and beautiful full body laughs, and I remembered long, solitary train rides with headphones keeping me safe, during that first autumn in Northern California when I started to learn the hills and valleys of my internal topography and how it wasn’t frightening at all.

probably somewhere over oregon; 01 may 2007

Today I was at the market, and I was being picky and smelling almost all of the peonies before I chose two, and inhaling deep this song came on my ipod and I felt such a wave of relief, I cannot express it adequately I think.

So I listened to it over and again while I chose beautiful food that would make me feel healthy, and I smiled at everyone who would let me catch their eye.

And I enjoyed every simple thing I could, and I noticed all manner of lovely things that probably were only visible to people with eyes like mine, and instead of secretly cataloguing it all for letters to send away, I just noticed them and let them pass, and I let them make me happy, because they were for me.

It’s always such a lovely surprise to discover that, in fact, the sky isn’t falling.

I think I can finally believe that it was only that time, and I probably don’t have to worry that it will ever happen again.

Now if you’ll pardon me, I have “Stomp the Yard” to watch and some popping, locking and dropping it to do.

Songs for Slow Mending, Part Three

“to understand”, jonathan barcan, 2007

It makes me feel safer, now

in the middle of the night,

the only light the glow of the monitor and

the street lamp 15 feet away from my open windows,

it makes me feel safer now,

to know that I am alone,

and that we all live lives of scraped knees and bruised knuckles,

we all float in fragile glass bubbles, satellites circling each other,

we all lose our breath when we smash against each other,

and the broken glass hangs in our eyelashes like sea water after a lonely beach day,

where we swam past the breaks believing we could reach the edge and then tumble off,

into space.

It makes me feel safer now in the middle of the night,

knowing that we are all alone,

even with other people,

we know we are all alone,

and with bent heads,

and prayer beads pulled around our bruised knuckles before our scraped knees reach the ground

we swim past the breaks towards the edge,

and we grab at each other

because we believe we can connect;

and this is what makes me feel safer now, in the middle of the night,

because we all want that, and we all try so hard, even when terrified, we try,

even when smashing into each other we try,

even though no amount of shared sea salt eyelash connexions will change it, we know we are alone, and yet

we try.

Yes, I Really Think So, Part Three

“a constancy that unnerves”, jonathan barcan, 2007

Today I walked on lunch like I always do, trading food for music, some time to think alone and cigarettes, and everything became clear to me, and I was calm.

Then tonight, I walked around my neighborhood and was shocked that the calm was still with me, and the air felt beautiful, and the cars seemed to move with a secret kind of elegance, and people smiled at me, and we looked each other in the eyes,

for real.

And I went to the convenience store where the doe-eyed boy I love works, and a beautiful woman held the door open for me, she jumped for it to make sure she caught it before I could, and I thanked her, and considered introducing myself but the moment passed, and we smiled and looked each other in the eyes,

for real.

And I walked up and down the aisles of the store, whistling this song because I couldn’t get it out of my head all night, through letter writing truths and phone calls that sounded exactly like I imagined, and surprising feelings of calm that stayed with me throughout an evening that I anticipated being far more difficult to deal with;

and I realized that this time the difference is I know myself in the way I have always wanted, and I am sure of my complete steadiness despite strange weeks of doubting that were really just old habits dying their last, merciful death, and I am satisfied that I have conducted myself, from beginning to end, in a way I had always hoped I would

and that tomorrow morning I will be able to wake up and look in the mirror, and I will smile and look myself in the eyes,

for real.

Gat damn, people, I am day four into awesomeosity and shit is fucking good.

Firstly, let me just say that today, M.I.A. has been turning me the fuck OUT. I danced pretty much all through my lunchtime walk, and then the whole time on the way home these three songs from the Diplo/M.I.A. slab made me lose muh fucken miiiyiiiind.

And all the peoples in traffic with me were losing thur minds with me because I was sharing with everyone.

Because, I Love, people.

And now probably everyone in muh building are enjoying it, because I am playing this shiz loud, and doing muh best to type whiles I dance.

And I’m sure the people outside are enjoying watching me because my windows and blinds are open, and I have been dancing muh ass off for the last hour and a half,

and I can tell you people,

today three different folks told me I was glowing,

because I fucken BEAM.

Songs for Standing Up, Part Three

“a gravity so dense”, jonathan barcan, 2007

Today I was subject to a narcoleptic kind of sleepiness, and this only happens at times of intense sadness or stress.

It scared the living piss out of me.

AND THEN,

I remembered who I was.

And I remembered the goodness of my heart.

And I remembered that I don’t need to have someone else recognize it, or accept it–it’s a lot to accept, and not everyone is equipped. It’s ok, I understand that.

Well, no I don’t, but that’s what makes me me and other people not me.

Because I am fucking In, Jack, I’m not letting a little, or shit, even a lot of fear get in the way of actually living, and knowing people, and sharing myself, and accepting good things.

I’m fucking over that shit, I am all about

Get With It or Get the FUCK OUT.

And all I know is,

it wasn’t so long ago that I was happy all the time, and I felt confident about who I am, and I didn’t for a second question my worth.

So fuck it, two tears in a bucket.

I’m Getting With It, people.

No shit.

Look, it’s hot. The kind of hot where all you can do is just go with it. You’re just sitting there in the corner, a dewy little human salt lick… might as well skank.

To skank: First, feel the beat. Get those arms swinging slightly and feel the bounce as you swing your hips. Move your weight from one foot to the other with each skank. Make sure your arms and legs coordinate (ie: If your right fist is moving forward, you should also be moving your right knee forward as you shift your weight. Then shift to the left.)
