Songs for Slow Mending, Part Three

“to understand”, jonathan barcan, 2007
It makes me feel safer, now
in the middle of the night,
the only light the glow of the monitor and
the street lamp 15 feet away from my open windows,
it makes me feel safer now,
to know that I am alone,
and that we all live lives of scraped knees and bruised knuckles,
we all float in fragile glass bubbles, satellites circling each other,
we all lose our breath when we smash against each other,
and the broken glass hangs in our eyelashes like sea water after a lonely beach day,
where we swam past the breaks believing we could reach the edge and then tumble off,
into space.
It makes me feel safer now in the middle of the night,
knowing that we are all alone,
even with other people,
we know we are all alone,
and with bent heads,
and prayer beads pulled around our bruised knuckles before our scraped knees reach the ground
we swim past the breaks towards the edge,
and we grab at each other
because we believe we can connect;
and this is what makes me feel safer now, in the middle of the night,
because we all want that, and we all try so hard, even when terrified, we try,
even when smashing into each other we try,
even though no amount of shared sea salt eyelash connexions will change it, we know we are alone, and yet
we try.
